December 2018

Thank you to all the lovely flower ladies who joined us on 7th December 2018 to decorate the church for Christmas.  We had a merry time whilst filling the church with greenery, flowers and silvery baubles.  This was followed by coffee, cake and a natter.

The same day was filled with sadness as many of us attended a funeral service for the much respected Jim Fitzgerald.  Jim had been a great supporter of the church over a number of years as the Church Fabric Officer.  He was instrumental in gaining grants for the repair of the Bedingfeld Chapel roof in 2009.  He will be greatly missed.

On 14th December a group of intrepid villagers set out in hi-viz, thermals and woolly hats to sing carols to the village.  Thank you to everyone who turned out in good voice and thank you also to the generous people on whose doorsteps we arrived.  Everyone made up feel very welcome and some even stood out in the cold in their pyjamas!  Thanks to your kind generosity the carollers raised £130.

We would like to welcome everyone to attend a Christmas Service, either at Didlington at 8.00pm on Christmas Eve, or Holy Communion at Oxborough at 9.00am

May we wish you all a very Merry Christmas.

Bedingfeld Chapel Roof Update

The chapel timbers have finally dried out enough for work to commence on replacing the stolen roof.  The temporary roof has been removed and a permanent replacement is now in progress.  The work should be completed before Christmas. Fundraising will then continue to restore the interior of the chapel.  The PCC would like to thank everyone who has contributed towards the repair works to date.

Farewell Party for Revd. Charles and Sarah Sherlock

Mike and Julie Wood kindly hosted a Farewell Party for Revd. Charles and Sarah Sherlock on 30th August 2017.

Both Charles and Sarah have made a wonderful contribution to the Oxborough Group and the local community in general. They will be greatly missed. Charles was presented with a crystal whisky decanter with glasses together with a couple of bottles of single malt.

We wish Charles and Sarah every happiness for the future

 Flower Festival – 24th & 25th June 2017
The flower festival at St John the Evangelist Church, Oxborough took place on Saturday 24th – Sunday 25th June and was a great success. The church was filled with flowers mostly from gardens in the village, on the theme of ‘flowers in a country church’. A café was set up in the North Aisle of the church where visitors could sit and enjoy a welcome cuppa and a range of delicious cakes. Plants were also on sale which proved popular. Our grateful thanks to everyone in the village and nearby who provided flowers, cakes, plants and lent a hand with refreshments and behind the scenes, helping us to raise £470.

All proceeds from the flower festival will go towards fundraising for the repair and restoration of the Bedingfeld Chapel following the theft of the lead roof in November.
Farewell to Danny & Carol Sutton
It was with great sadness that the PCC said farewell to Danny and Carol who had tended the churchyard for over 17 years. Danny and Carol are moving out of Oxborough and felt it was time to hand over the reigns to someone else. Peter Fisher has kindly agreed to take up the reigns; it is already doing a great job.

Parochial Church Council News 1st May 2017

The PCC would like to thank all those who have dedicated their time and effort into helping keep the church of St John The Evangelist Church looking so beautiful and welcoming during the past year.

In particular, but not exclusively, the PCC would like to thank:

Teresa Squires and Alan Reid for their services as Churchwardens.  Both have stepped down from this role.

Alan Reid for continuing in his role as Fabric Officer overseeing the repair of the Bedingfeld Chapel roof.

Janet Reid for tirelessly supporting Alan in his role as Churchwarden, organising the Flower Rota and numerous other duties which are too many to list.

Carol and Danny Sutton for their 17 years of mowing and tending the church grounds.  They have done an amazing job and will be sorely missed.

Martyn and Phyllis Clark who have held an annual concert (The Christmas Cracker) in order to raise funds for the church.

Sally Oxborough for cleaning the church so beautifully every month.

All those on the Flower Rota who have made the church look vibrant and welcoming for the numerous visitors.

Kelvin Smith and any others who have opened and locked the church during the year.

Anyone else who has helped out during the year who has not been mentioned!
